Overview
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $1.7 million in funding for UNSW’s $4.3 million Project CICCADA, aimed at improving the integration of consumer energy resources (CER) like rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs into the National Energy Market (NEM).
Australia leads globally in rooftop solar adoption, with household batteries and EVs rising rapidly. Proper CER integration is essential for achieving renewable energy and emissions goals.
Project CICCADA will analyse real-world data to understand how CER affects grid stability and performance under various conditions. ARENA’s acting CEO, Chris Faris, emphasized the role of CER in decentralizing energy production, improving grid flexibility, and empowering consumers.
The project will support the Australian Energy Market Operator and distributors with tools and insights to maintain a secure and efficient energy system. Project lead Dr. Baran Yildiz highlighted the importance of evidence-based research in maximizing CER benefits while ensuring network reliability.
